The Principles of Wing Chun Kung Fu

punch1The underlying principles of Wing Chun are:

  • Simplicity – the most effective Wing Chun techniques are the simplest techniques
  • Directness – students learn to defend and counter-attack in the most direct and efficient manner, utilising different angles and fast explosive footwork
  • Relaxation – is the key to faster and more powerful punches and kicks. The practitioner only tenses his or her muscles at the moment of impact with the opponent
  • Feeling and control – Wing Chun practitioners practice sticky hands. This enables the practitioner to feel the opponents movements and react accordingly to control the opponents movements
  • Using your opponents force against him or her – Wing Chun practitioners do not have to be well built. The style emphasis is on using the opponents’ strength against themselves. We do not use force on force – deflect, accept or redirect
  • Using 2 hands at the same time – Wing Chun practitioners can use defensive and offensive techniques simultaneously
  • Central line – the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Wing Chun practitioners utilise this theory to deliver devastating attacks while protecting their own centre. In Wing Chun we chase the structure but we do not chase the hands
